We leave behind us the obelisk of S. Maria a Mare, and cross via Giovani Amendola and we find ourselves in front of the small Church of S. Giacomo a Platea where
in the XIII century, by an ancient privilege of Maiori (that lasted
until XVII century) the Archbishop of Amalfi took possession of the
entire diocese
At the side of the altar is the entrance to the Arch-Confraternity "Mortis et Oratione", founded in the XVI century. In these rooms it is possible to admire the vestments and the documents that are a testament to a long and glorious history We leave by the
door on the left hand side, and on the road again we take the seafront
towards the west
The first buildings we come to , at the time of the Republic held the Admiralty, the Customs and Salt Warehouses. A little further ahead passing the entrance to V.Capitolo where there is a small garden, the ward of S.Tecla ( named after the ancient patron church of Mariners) and ancient seat of the Greater Arsenals At the end of the walk, near to the port on the inner side: the Chiesa e Convento di S. Francesco Built
in 1405, with the passing centuries the complex was at the centre of
many disasters that made necessary the complete rebuilding. The last
work was done in 1938 when the façade was rebuilt and over the
great portal of the late 1500's a ceramic effigy of St. Francis was
placed . Also
by the altar and in the gallery of the convent many notable paintings:

prima di allontanarci non possiamo tralasciare l'orto del convento Before
leaving do not miss the convent gardens, beautiful and quiet like all
cloistered gardens, at the far end you can admire the "Grotto
di S. Bernardino" and the spring that the Saint made
gush from the rock face.
Grotta dell'Annunziata On
the inside, in the XIV century the fishermen's corporation erected a
small hospital for their sick and a church probably with two naves,
named after the Virgin SS. Dell'Annunziata, their protector . |
Back on the main road, on the inside is the tower "dell'Annunziata" Practically the entrance to Castello Miramare originally "Castle Mezzacapo", name of the noble family that had it erected in the last century SThe
structure is on three floors, it has three round towers with conical
spires at the corners of the façade and on the back of the building. This is where our itinerary ends, further ahead is Minori , the ancient Rheginna Minor but that is another story... |
